Carolina Fest - Day 219





With the back to school season revving up, it's not too early to mark your calendar for Carolina Fest in Chesterfield! The date has just been set for October 6th and the festival will provide a full day of fun activities for all. Arts and crafts, kids pavilion, pumpkin carving and decorating contest, pet parade, and a cornhole tournament! There will be cash prizes for the top two teams, so pick your partner and start practicing today! For more information on the tournament, contact Randy Rollins at 843.622.5549.

CSA National Championship - Day 218


The Carolina Softball Association 2012 National Championship will be held this weekend in Florence! The championship will be at the Freedom Florence Recreation Complex August 10-12. Get out and show your support for the teams vying for the title! Great games are sure to be played, but don't miss the extra team and individual running, throwing and hitting competitions on Saturday evening!

Gospel in the Park - Day 217

Gospel in the park returns this Sunday at Pride Park in Hartsville. Gospel in the Park is a free outdoor concert series for the whole family. Everyone is welcome to come out to enjoy great music, but be sure to bring your lawn chairs and praising shoes! The concert begins at 5pm and the series will continue on September 9th and October 7th. Talented performers from all over the Pee Dee will be performing throughout the concert series, so don't miss your chance to enjoy it! Artisans of the Cotton Trail Application Deadline - Day 216


 
Today, August 6th, is the deadline for applications for inclusion into the South Carolina Cotton Trail! Artisans from Darlington, Chesterfield, Lee, Marlboro, and Florence counties are eligible for inclusion into the group. Currently, painters, potters, photographers, collage artists, soap-makers, jewelry-makers, glass artists and weavers make up the Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail.  

Potential members are selected through a two-part jury process to ensure their craft is of a good standard. For the first stage, works will be reviewed by e-mailed jpeg photographs. Artists can submit five jpeg photos of their work to peedeearts@gmail.com (please include contact info) to initiate the process. These photos will then be distributed to the jury. Those meeting basic standards will be asked to present their work in person for the final jury stage. This will take place at the Art Trail Gallery in downtown Florence on August 17. Accepted media for jurying are: clay, drawing, fiber glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, natural materials, painting, paper, photography, sculpture, handmade books, and wood. Specialty foods made in the area will also be considered for jurying. 

Applications for Membership can be obtained by emailing Bruce Douglas at peedeearts@gmail.com. The mission of the Artisans of the South Carolina Cotton Trail is to bring together artists, artisans, and retailers for the benefits of marketing, tourism, education, and shared resources.

Tobacco Heritage Day - Day 215






If you grew up in the region, you might know what an old fasioned puttin' in is all about! But if you have no idea what I'm talking about, check out the L.W. Paul Living History Farm today for the Tobacco Heritage Day! The festival is from 9am-4pm and you will get some hands on practice with stringing and hanging tobacco. You will learn all about farming life during the early 20th century. You will see things like blacksmithing, grits milling, and soap making. The kids will really enjoy the hands on children's activities and live entertainment!

Auditions for The Foreigner - Day 214

The Florence Little Theater will be holding auditions for The Foreigner on Sunday, August 5th at 2pm and Wednesday, August 8th at 7pm. Both auditions are for performers 18 years and older. The auditions will be held at the FLT and prior experience is not required. All audition materials will be provided! 
  
If you just want to be an audience member and not a performer, then mark your calendars! The Foreigner will run at the FLT November 2-10.

Magic City Survey Art Show - Day 213






 
The Dr. N. Lee Morris Gallery at the Drs. Bruce and Lee Foundation Library in Florence announce a call to artists for the first semi-annual Magic City Survey. The juried art competition is open to all amateur and professional artists ages 16 and up. Artists must be a resident of the Pee Dee region. The theme for this year's contest is "Southern Impressions - Depictions of Life in the South" and will highlight the highest caliber of art relating to South Carolina. 

Artists may submit their work until September 30th and can download directions for submission here. You may also pick up entry forms and instructions from all branches of the Florence County Library System. There is no entry fee for the contest.
