SC Pecan Festival vendor application... - Day 212



Before we know it, it will be time for one of our favorite festivals - The Pecan Festival! This fun festival draws over 50,000 visitors and locals to the streets of Downtown Florence. The Pecan Festival has 7 stages and offers tons of live music, a children's area with free activities, a bike race and a foot race, and tons of yummy food. If you would like a vending space, you can file your application before August 3rd to avoid the late fee of $10. The fee for art and craft vendors is $75 and the fee for food vendors is $250. The cost covers the vending fee and the City of Florence special event license. You can click here to download you application now. Reptile Rodeo - Day 211



Check out Lynches River County Park and the Environmental Discovery Center for a Reptile Rodeo on Saturday! Learn all about snakes, alligators and turtles and their importance in our ecosystem. Thirty Thirty Thirty - Day 210






Thirty artists! Thirty dollars! July 30th!

The Thirty Thirty Thirty event is a fundraiser that provides art collectors the opportunity to acquire original works of fine art and handcrafted jewelry while supporting our local community of artists. All of the items that have been donated to the event are valued over $100 and retail for up to ten times that! Ticket holders will participate in a lottery drawing to determine which piece of artwork they will receive. Every ticket holder will go home with an original piece of artwork! This is a win-win for everyone. Tickets are $30 and additional guests can attend for $10. Your ticket gets you an amazing piece of art, refreshments and entertainment from local jazz musician Rick Paulus. To get tickets for tomorrow night's event, please contact Mary at 496.1670. The summer market will be held inside the Art Trail Gallery and will offer a variety of unique arts and crafts for purchase. William Douglas Concert - Day 208






Enjoy the beautiful sounds of William Douglas on the four manual Reuter organ at First Baptist Church next Saturday, August 4th. The concert will begin at 6pm and the church is located at 300 S. Irby Street. William started playing the piano at five years old and started studying organ just three years ago! This will be his "farewell" concert as he will be leaving Florence to pursue a degree in Organ Performance at USC in a few weeks. The program will include Karg-Elert's "Praise the Lord with Drums and Cymbals," movements from Handel's "Royal Fireworks Suite," works by Bach, and more. Admission in free.

Dessert & Wine Night - Day 207



Gather up your friends for a ladies night out at Railroad Junction! Create an artistic masterpiece while sipping on wine and satisfying your sweet tooth! This event is for adults only and the cost is $15, which includes all of the materials you will need. Tonight's theme is assemblage art with found objects, so feel free to bring anything you would like to use in your piece. You can bring things like small game pieces, little toys, broken jewelry, keys, sea shells, or anything else you might find in a junk drawer. The Grass is Greener Conference - Day 206





The Grass is Greener Conference will offer sessions and panels on different topics surrounding our climate. You can participate and learn about climate changes, going green, alternative energy sources and more this Friday from 9am-4pm. You will hear from distinguished experts regarding renewable and sustainable energy and learn how to become more energy efficient. Kreative Kids at Railroad Junction - Day 205















Bring your "Kreative Kids" to Railroad Junction tonight from 5:30-7:30 for some "kreative" fun! Tonight the kids will be drawing and painting morphed critters with Mary Williams. No experience? Stuff the Bus - Day 204





If you are heading Downtown for Florence After Five to enjoy live music and fun, don't forget to bring your school supply donations! In donating to Stuff the Bus you are helping the United Way supply children with the school materials they need to start the school year off the right way! The bus will be in the breezeway along with games, arts and crafts, Home Depot craft kits, and Steve the Stinger. There will also be a children's play area, so gather up some school supplies to help Stuff the Bus for local kids in need!

Swamp Fox Quilters Challenge - Day 203

Stop by the Hartsville Museum to check out a variety of quilts from the Swamp Fox Quilters Guild. Each year the Quilters Guild display their quilts for visitors to vote on and admire.  This years theme was "Quilting in the Carolinas" and it provided a wide variety of Carolina specialty quilts. All of the participating quilts and the winners are on display now, so stop by the museum before the end of August to see who took home top prize! Exhibit hours: Mon-Fri, 10am-5pm (closed for lunch 12-1pm on Fri); Sat, 10am-2pm.

Dining out for a cause - Day 202




If you are going to dine out this weekend, you might consider dining at a local Ruby Tuesday restaurant. This weekened, Ruby Tuesday locations will help raise money for the CUE Center for Missing Persons July 20-22, 2012. Participating locations in Florence will contribute 20% of all purchases to the organization when servers are presented with a Community GiveBack Program flyer like the one seen above. The contribution is based on 20% of the net sales from guests that bring in a GiveBack flyer for the organization's specific event. The CUE Center for Missing Persons is focused on finding the missing, advocating for their causes, and supporting their families.

Saturday Markets - Day 201


Tomorrow throughout the Pee Dee there will be plenty of farm fresh produce for you to pick from! Support your farmers and buy local! Here is where you can catch farmers' markets tomorrow:

Cheraw - The Cheraw area farmers provide an assorment of fresh produce and flowers. The market is located on Front Street, across from Old St. David's Church. The hours on Saturday are from 8am-2pm. They are also open on Tuesdays (8:30am-1:30pm) and Thursdays (2-6pm).

Marion Market Place - Each Saturday the Farmers Market & Marion Market Place is open from 9am-1pm. Visit the Market Place to enjoy a variety of fresh vegetables, fruits, and market treasures!

Market on Darlington Square - Head over to Darlington the third Saturday of each month for Market on Darlington Square! This is an open air market, situated on the County Courthouse plaza. There will be fresh produce, but artists and craftsmen bring their work, too. And in case you work up an appetite, local restaurants provide breakfast and lunchtime menus for shoppers. The hours are from10am-2pm.

Pee Dee State Farmers Market - Located in Florence, the Pee Dee State Farmers Market is open daily and on Saturdays, too. You can stop by to browse the produce and plants, or just enjoy some homemade peach ice cream! Open 8am-6pm Monday through Saturday.

Friday Night Lineup - Day 200






Interested in a concert tomorrow night? Or maybe something a little more low key and intimate? You have your choice of a variety of shows, genres, and locations all happening tomorrow night in the Pee Dee!

The Florence Civic Center will host soulful R&B sounds from Fantasia, Joe and comedy from George Willborn beginning at 8:00pm. For ticket information, please call the box office at 1.800.745.3000.

In Hartsville, The Midnight Rooster will serve up a performance from Time Sawyer in the comfort of the coffee house. You can check out this jam session with the rock folk band from 8:30-10:30pm.

Dylan Sneed will be at Mac's Lounge in Hartsville at 10pm. I blogged about that performance yesterday and you can read it here.

If you are in the mood for something a little more theatrical, there are two performances of the musical 'Annie Jr.' in the Pee Dee this weekend. 

The Florence Little Theatre will perform at 7:30 Friday night. Tickets can be purchased from the box office for $15 adults/ $10 children. 

The Coker College Theater Camp will also perform their rendition of 'Annie Jr.' in the Performing Arts Center. The performance will begin at 7:30pm.

Check out Dylan Sneed performing live in Hartsville on Friday night! Stop by Mac's Lounge to hear Dylan perform a solo electric set beginning at 10pm. Dylan is a Hartsville-based, critically acclaimed songwriter. Friday night's set will include material from his past two records as well as new songs and covers. There is a $5 cover to get in and Mac's is located at 115 Camden Avenue in Hartsville.

AME Conference - Day 197




The African Methodist Episcopal Church will gather in Florence this week for its annual Christian Educational Leadership Congress. The conference will begin on Wednesday, July 18th, and continue through Friday at the Florence Civic Center. The conference is expected to bring in over 3,000 attendees each day to our area! The 3-day event will host a variety of meetings, theological seminars, praise and worship, and educational sessions. This year, the conference welcomes the newly appointed bishop of the South Carolina AME Church, Revered Richard Franklin Norris.

Watermelons! - Day 195




The Pageland Watermelon Festival kicks off on Friday at 3pm! The festival will run through Saturday evening in downtown Pageland. 




You can enjoy fresh watermelons from the watermelon market or partake in the watermelon eating contest or the seed spitting contest! There will live music and entertainment, as well as a magic show for the kids. Don't miss out on the carnival games, delicious food and parade on Saturday morning! Enjoy this festival celebrating one of summer's icons - watermelons!

History of the Florence Stockade - Day 194

Join Dr. Tracy Power for an informative session on the history of the Florence Stockade. On Sunday, July 22nd, at 2:30pm, the Dr. John M. Thomason Public Library in Olanta will present the program. Topics covered will include the history of the stockade from its opening in September 1864 until its closing in February 1865. Dr. Power will explain the context of its creation by the Confederate authorities in the last winter of the Civil War, the Union prisoners who where held there and their experiences. Light refreshments will be served.

Midnight Rooster Coffee Tasting - Day 192



Sign up now for a coffee tasting at the Midnight Rooster in Hartsville. On Saturday at 3pm you can join the coffee shop manager, Whitney Walter, as she explains the history of coffee and teaches proper techniques and tasting skills. There will be light snacks offered for pairing with the different coffees. Discounts will be offered on whole bean coffees by the pound for participants. Corn Hole Tournament - Day 192



I don't know about you, but I think corn hole is such a fun game to play. It's great  to play socially, but for the city-wide Corn Hole Tournament you need to bring your game face because there will be a $500 grand prize! Get your team together now for this tournament. It will be held on July 27th from 5-9pm during the Florence After Five concert. Deadline for registration is coming up on July 20th. Upcoming Events! - Day 190






There are some great events coming to the Florence Civic Center and we want to make sure you mark you calendars now!

On July 20th, enjoy a night of soul, R&B, and comedy all in one! Fantasia and Joe will be performing live with special guest George Willborn and SFB. Fantasia is the very talented 2004 season winner of American Idol and has been an 8 time Grammy nominee! Joe is known for his smooth vocals and sultry R&B sounds. His album, My Name Is Joe, went number 2 on the Billboard charts in 2000. Combine those two talents with the hilarious comedian, George Willborn, and you have one very entertaining night! George is currently the co-host of the syndicated radio show, The Michael Baisden Show. Tickets are on sale now and start at $35.





Then, on July 27th, the 19th Annual Pee Dee Deer Classic rolls into town for the weekend! The Civic Center will host South Carolina’s largest deer hunting show from the 27th-29th. This big event for huntsmen will feature guns, archery, ATVs, sporting goods, outfitters, camo, knives, tree stands, trucks, boats, and more.

The event will be open on Friday, 4pm-9pm, Saturday, 9am-7pm and on Sunday from 10am-6pm. Admission is $8.00 for adults; children ages 7-12 are $3.00. Kids under 6 are admitted for free.

On September 13th, the Relish Cooking Show will bring the nation’s largest food magazine to life in Florence! The two-hour cooking show will take you inside the Relish Kitchen with renowned chef Steven Petusevsky as your host. Learn different cooking techniques that will help you in the kitchen. This cooking show will bring you tips and comedy in one empowering experience. Audience members will take home a Relish Magazine cookbook and have a chance to win door prizes! Ticket prices will be announced soon so check back to the Florence Civic website!

Evening Sky - Day 188

 Interested in what's going on in the sky? The Evening Sky program at the Francis Marion University Planetarium is designed to demonstrate what events are happening right now in the sky! They will show you what constellations are visible and what planets are in sight right now. The sky varies throughout the year and this program will show you exactly what can be seen. There will also be a demonstration on how to read a SkyMap. This program is free and open to the public. It will be held on the 2nd floor of the Cauthen Educational Media Center on the campus of Francis Marion. The program begins promptly at 2pm.

Join Marietta Melton the first Saturday of each month at the College Inn in Cheraw for open poetry night. We're Gettin' AgCited! - Day 185


The Florence CVB is currently working on the fall/winter edition of AgCited! This installment of AgCited will feature events taking place in the Pee Dee and Coastal Regions during the months of September-December 2012.

AgCited is an agritourism initiative aimed to increase tourism in the northeast region of South Carolina by offering family-friendly events every weekend of a season! Events from the AgCited promotion range from farm festivals to wine tastings, and include plenty of fun activities, like planting and story telling, for the whole family.

Bean Groovy Concert - Day 184

Just Peachy! - Day 183





Do you love peaches? The orchards at McArthur Farms are full of juicy peaches just waiting for you! They will be serving up just about anything peach you can think of! Celebrate peach season with fresh peaches, a peach recipe contest, homemade peach ice cream, deep fried peach pie and cobblers. Take the family to the Peach Festival in Bennettsville to enjoy live beach music, shagging, antique cars, games and face painting. Admission is free this Saturday from 12-4pm.

Movie at the Market - Day 182




On Thursday, July 12, catch a family-friendly movie at the National Bean Market in Lake City! The movie will start at 9pm. The best part is that the admission for adults is only $2 and $1 for kids 4-12. 4 and under are admitted for free! Stay cool inside while enjoying a great evening with your family.
